Review of First Ascent, the latest movie from Sender Films

"I was the first person to..." What is it about being the first person to accomplish a feat that spurs people on? History is full of famous "firsts"; usually accompanied by media coverage and fans to cheer on their hero. But, in the absence of fanfare, what is it that drives people on?

In First Ascent, the latest DVD from Sender Films, filmmaker Peter Mortimer strives to show climbers who are driven to complete a first ascent. If you aren't familiar with mountain climbing, a first ascent is the first successful climb of a mountain, boulder or route. Often, the route is nothing more than a crack in the sheer face of a cliff wall. There are a number of famously unclimbed routes throughout the world. Although they have been attempted many times, they remain unclimbed. One of those climbs is Cobra Crack in British Columbia. First Ascent opens with, and closely follows, traditional climber Didier Berthod as he sets his sights on conquering Cobra Crack.

A Determined Few...In addition to Berthod, First Ascent introduces us to climbers throughout the world as they make their own attempts at a first ascent on a variety of courses. Rather than showing anonymous climbers, Mortimer introduces viewers to the climbers. Giving you the chance to hear through their own words what it is that drives them and to also feel their enthusiasm. Each climber is personable and energetic and you find yourself cheering them on. From the youngest up-and-comers, to established veterans of climbing, each one is entertaining and passionate about their sport.

Something for Everybody...Mortimer traveled around the world to find climbers tackling some of the toughest routes. First Ascent visits climbers in Utah, Colorado, Canada and Thailand. There is also a brief sequence on urban climbing in Hollywood

Mixed into the climbing sequences are some fictionalized "skits". In the first, viewers are given a brief history of climbing and first ascents. The "teacher Timmy" character is a bit much but the information is relevant and quickly introduced.

The film isn't only appealing to climbing enthusiasts. The shots and scenery are amazing, as are some of the falls. The filmmakers have truly captured the drama and determination of all the climbers and anyone watching could find themselves rooting for them.

To Get Your Own...Sender Films produces quality, and award-winning films about climbing, mountaineering and the outdoors. First Ascent is available at the Sender Films website, for $29.95
